Meet Derek Binsted

Derek Binsted is a PGTAA Class A Master Professional with 35 years of teaching and 45 years on the course. Based in Huffman, TX, Derek teaches what each individual actually needs — if you're a raw beginner, he'll build you from the ground up: grip, stance, and setup. If you're an established golfer, he'll watch your full game and get it up to scratch.

Derek's approach is entirely observational and hands-on. He watches everything — how you drive off the tee, your ball flight, chipping, putting, irons, and bunker shots — then targets exactly what will move the needle for you. He's seen complete beginners go from never touching a club to getting out on the course, and he's helped established players lower their scores by focusing on the thing most amateurs overlook: course management.

Derek first picked up a club in the UK, where he took up golf as a hobby. What started as a pastime quickly revealed itself as something deeper — a passion that would shape the rest of his life. That hobby became a profession, and that profession became a calling. To Derek, golf is more than a sport: it's a game you can play with anyone, at any age, at any level — and there's always something more to learn.

"Course management is the 15th club in the bag."

Ball Fitting

You play a ball on every single hole — so it better be the right one. Derek uses a golf simulator to capture data from your current ball, then matches that data to the ball that best suits your swing speed, tempo, and the spin characteristics you need to hold greens and control your shot.

✏️ Contact Derek to schedule a ball fitting session.

Club Fitting Guidance

The head and shaft of your club should be an extension of you — doing the work so your body doesn't have to compensate. Derek assesses how your current clubs are matched to your build, swing, and style, and guides you toward the right fit. Playing with ill-fitted clubs creates bad habits that no lesson can fix.

"The head and the shaft need to be part of you — they should be doing the work, not your body."

— Derek Binsted

Your First Hour with Derek

Here's exactly what a 1-hour session looks like — and what to bring so you get the most out of every minute on the grass.

What Happens in the Session

1
Introduction & Assessment (~10 min)

Derek starts by learning about you — your experience, goals, and what brought you out today. New students hit a few balls while Derek watches your natural swing, stance, grip, and ball flight. He's building a picture of where you are before deciding where to focus.

2
Targeted Instruction (~35 min)

This is the heart of the session. If you're a beginner, Derek builds from the ground up — grip, stance, setup, and your first real swings. If you're an established player, he zeroes in on the specific area of your game that will move the needle fastest: driver off the tee, iron play, short game, putting, bunkers, or course management decisions.

3
Drills & Repetition (~10 min)

Teaching without reinforcement doesn't stick. Derek walks you through purposeful practice drills so the changes you've made become muscle memory — not just something you understood in the moment and forgot on the next tee box.

4
Recap & Next Steps (~5 min)

Derek wraps up with a clear summary of what was worked on, what to practice before next time, and what the next lesson would build on. You leave with a specific focus — not just a feeling that something happened.

What to Bring

👟
Golf Shoes or Firm-Soled Athletic Shoes

All lessons are on real grass — proper footwear keeps you stable through the swing and protects the turf.

🏌️
Your Golf Clubs (if you have them)

Bring your own set so Derek can assess your current equipment and how well it fits your game. Beginners without clubs — Derek has loan clubs available at no extra charge.

🏐
A Sleeve of Golf Balls

Bring at least a sleeve (3 balls) for the session. If you're interested in a ball fitting, bring your current ball so Derek can pull data from it.

🧢
Hat, Sunscreen & Water

You're outside on a Texas grass range. Come prepared for the sun and stay hydrated — especially in warmer months.

🎽
Comfortable Athletic Clothing

Wear clothing that allows a full range of motion. Most courses request collared shirts — when in doubt, dress as you would to play a round.

💬
Your Goals & Questions

Think ahead about what you most want to improve. The more specific you can be — "I keep slicing my driver" or "I can't get out of bunkers" — the faster Derek can target what matters.

💳
Payment — Cash or Venmo

Derek accepts Cash and Venmo. Payment is due at the time of the lesson.

Ready to Book?

Pick a time that works for you. When you book, you'll answer a few short questions so Derek arrives already knowing your goals, experience, and equipment — no time wasted, no guesswork, just golf.

🎯
Your Goals

What level are you aiming for, and by when? Derek tailors every session to your target — not a generic plan.

📊
Your Experience

Complete beginner or established player? Knowing where you're starting from lets Derek plan the right session structure from the first minute.

🏌️
Your Equipment

Do you have your own clubs? Are they fitted to you? Derek can assess your gear on arrival — or loan you clubs if you're just starting out.

⏱️
Your Timeline

How quickly do you want to improve? Setting a realistic expectation up front means you and Derek are working toward the same finish line.

"This guy is a good time. He is an incredible coach and took me, a no golf background wannabe enthusiast from not being able to make contact on my first 2 dozen swings to making consistent contact and virtually aiming shots in the first meeting. I plan on using Derek long term and if I could rate him higher than 5 stars, I would."
